Tourist booed and harassed after climbing ancient pyramid in Mexico | World News

A tourist went viral after a TikTok video captured her trespassing on the ancient Mayan temple of Kukulcán in Mexico and being booed by a mob of locals in the process.

The blonde woman was filmed climbing the 91 steps from a distance despite the fact that the public was prohibited from climbing the 79-foot structure at the Chichén Itzá archaeological site.

She was seen posing and dancing on top of the pyramid, known as El Castillo, before a security guard ushered her into the angry crowd.

A closer clip showed her reaching the top where she appeared to enter the monument before giving another wave and dancing.

Angry locals were filmed pulling her hair, pushing her and drenching her with water bottles as she pushed her way through the crowd.

Some were heard yelling “Get out,” “Lock her up,” and “Jail!”

TikToker Angela Lopeze posted the images with the caption: “That’s why you don’t disrespect the historic Mayan pyramids.”

Another person who filmed the incident said the act showed “a lack of respect”.

The Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the public has been prohibited from climbing it since 2008.

It was built by the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization sometime between the 8th and 12th centuries AD and served as a temple to the Kukuclan deity.
